The Monastery of Christ in the Desert

The Abbey of Christ in the Desert is a contemplative Benedictine community of some 40 monks, located about 25 miles from Abiquiu, New Mexico, at the end of Forest Service Road 151 in the Chama Canyon wilderness. The community is comprised of men from ten different nations, all who have come together to follow the Benedictine life of prayer, work and reading.

Founded in 1964, the Monastery has no external apostolate other than its guesthouse. The monastic guesthouse for private retreatants is open year round and day visitors and pilgrims are always welcome. As an enclosed comtemplative community, our ministry is primarily that of intercessory prayer as well as hospitality. The Liturgy of the Hours and Holy Mass are celebrated each day, with special emphasis on the use of Gregorian chant for the liturgy. We pray for the
intentions of our Archbishop, the priests, deacons, religious and laity of the Archdiocese, for our guests and visitors, those who ask us for prayers, as well as for our friends, families and benefactors.

The Benedictines were founded in the 6th century by St.Benedict of Nursia, Italy. Two of the abbeys he founded, Subiaco and Monte Cassino, are still in existence. The Benedictines are the oldest order in the Catholic Church and can be found today on every inhabited continent of the world. The monks of Christ in the Desert earn their income from the monastic guesthouse, gift shop on the property, craft work and some farming on the property.
