The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL) are represented in the Archdiocese by Sister Phyllis Stowell, principal of Santo Niño Regional School in Santa Fe. Sister Phyllis has served as a principal in Santa Fe for the past 16 years. During that time, she oversaw the consolidation of two Catholic schools and the building and opening of the new school. Sister Janet Cashman works in the neighboring Gallup Diocese in the immigration services office of Catholic Charities. She provides consultation to immigrants preparing for citizenship or permanent residency. The SCLs' first ministry in New Mexico was St. Anthony's Sanitarium in Las Vegas, which opened in January, 1897, to serve tuberculosis patients. The facility transitioned to a general hospital that operated under SCL leadership until 1973, when ownership was transferred to Las Vegas Hospital. In succeeding years, individual SCLs provided medical services in New Mexico and ministered to Native Americans. The SCLs are celebrating their 150th anniversary this year (2008). Their mother house is in Leavenworth, Kansas. The sisters serve in 11 states and in Peru, where they have native Peruvians in their community. There are currently more than 300 SCLs and 220 associates who share their charism. The sisters have four sponsored ministries: Cristo Rey High School, Kansas City, Mo.; Mount St. Vincent Home, Denver, Colo.; the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System (nine hospitals and four clinics for the uninsured in four states); and the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth and Overland Park, Kan.
